Twitter

What is Twitter?

Twitter is an online news and social networking service where users post and interact with "tweets" or posts that are restricted to 140 characters. Any registered users on the site are able to post within the character restriction, and those not registered can read tweets if the accounts are not private. Twitter was founded on March 21, 2006 in San Francisco, CA by current CEO Jack Dorsey and others. If you want to find out whats happening in the world right now, Twitter is the place to be with constant updates ranging from individuals, politics, business, and many more.

Purpose and Problem-Solving

The purpose of Twitter is the ability to put out and relay information extremely quickly. Now the examples of Twitters applications can range depending on who is using the account. If an individual is the one using Twitter for personal reasons, its typical to see them posting updates about their own life. Its normal to see the person tweeting about how the day went, any sporting events, funny videos, or anything they find interesting. Twitter on the individual side is extremely laid back and typically lends itself to comedic values. For example, when embarrassing moments happen nationally all you have to do is login to your twitter account and you will see plenty of funny videos or pictures telling you what happened.

If the twitter account is hosted by a business or any organization the purpose and use changes. These type of accounts look to use Twitter as another source of advertising and digital marketing, mostly for free. These type of accounts allow businesses to put out posts showing their new product and see how the general public reacts, and to simply get the message out. Another way that businesses can effectively use Twitter is to make a Twitter poll, which can double as a survey to get essentially free data for their R&D operations and marketing can help find what the customers really want. Finally, these accounts can be "promoted" now. According to celeb-brand-agent.com, the costs associated with promotion are as follows, You choose to bid a given amount that you are willing to pay per engagement, and the bid helps decide where and when the Tweet shows up on users’ timelines. Twitter will only charge you for the engagements that your Tweet generates. For example, organic impressions gained from the Tweet (the post showing up on a Twitter user’s timeline) will not count as engagements. Depending on your bid, engagement costs range from $0.20-$4.00 per engagement. Engagement costs are assessed only when the Tweet is replied to, retweeted, favorited, or if the link inside the Tweet is accessed. The budget: You will decide on a daily budget to assist with proper allocation of funds for your campaign and to ensure maximum efficiency. There is an option for setting a total budget if you need to put a cap on the cost of the total campaign. The owner of the promoted Tweet can even specify how the budget will be spent; spread the budget evenly over the day, or spend the daily amount as quickly as possible.

Use of the App

I have used Twitter for a long time now and I can truthfully say that the application has largely stayed the same the entire time I have used it. Obviously, there have been updates and minor changes to layouts and functionality but for the most part there have been very minimal changes. I think this is extremely important because it shows that what they have has worked in the past and is continuing to flourish. As far as being user-friendly, the app is extremely easy to use. This may be somewhat biased simply due to the length of time that I have used the app. However, I did teach my mother how to make a twitter and she has been all over it since that day with almost no follow up questions about how to do certain things. I think the most important piece of Twitter is the 140 character limit because it eliminates the tendency for ranting or saying more than you need to. Twitter takes on the attitude of say what you mean, be short and sweet, and get to the point.

Twitter Lite

Although I have used Twitter for probably 5 or more years now, there are still things that I am finding out. Twitter Lite is a mode that you can select within the settings and this can really be a lifesaver. It’s meant to solve issues of slow connections or using too much data. Twitter Lite minimizes data usage, loads more quickly on a slow connection, and takes up less storage. In data save mode, users will see only a blurred preview of photos and videos, which you have to click on if you decide to view it. For those of you with data limitations know the worst thing that can happen is to get the text message from your provider saying that you have used all of your data. Twitter Lite is a solution to the data problem.

How can small business use Twitter

If you are a large corporation, you typically have the ability to afford social media specialists or people who know what they are doing. For this section I will focus on how small businesses can effectively use Twitter who may not have the luxury of a large corporation. Here are a few ideas of how a small business can use Twitter in a smart, effective way:

Use hashtags. According to USA Today, hashtags act as a “force multiplier” for Internet and television advertising revenue. Find a relevant hashtag that’s trending now, and join the conversation in a way that’s meaningful and authentic to your business.

Add Photos. Allow your followers to see a visual story, and twitter can facilitate the photo posting.

Don't Overthink it. Act like a normal person and respond to concerns, engage in conversations, and most importantly show that you're paying attention to the audience.

Get your followers excited. Set up an exciting promotions to get more followers on your page and make sure the rewards will encourage customers!
